In Our Own Words

The Importance of Support Groups

By September 2004 I had been waiting 21 months since my first consultation with Dr Amson regarding WLS surgery. I had also been off work for two months on stress/exhaustion/physical breakdown leave. I was in the depths of despair. I was depressed, anxious, in physical pain and truly felt like I was imprisoned in this fat suit with no parole date.

In September I bought a computer and began using the two message boards: Dr Amson's and BC-WLS. It changed my life. You see, all my life I've felt like an alien on a strange planet. I was the only fat one in my family, I was the fattest person in my school classes, I was always picked last for gym teams, I was the fattest person in my office at work, and the list goes on and on. Then I started talking to the people on the message boards and at last, I was home.

The support group members were (and are) loving, supportive, compassionate, intelligent, humorous and strong. They were all struggling with weight issues, I wasn't the only one anymore. I was part of a family and that helped me more than I can say.

My Mum, who has always been wonderfully supportive, mentions often how happy she is I got this computer because she could see the difference in me as I connected with the support group members. She saw me blossom and get my sense of humour and pride back. She is very grateful for what the members have done for me.

There is a great expression: "If I have succeeded at all it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants".

We all grow together, one person learns something, passes it on and the next person benefits from that knowledge. We stand on each others shoulders to reach our goals. And those shoulders are strong, sturdy and loving.

Whether on-line or in-person, Support Group are crucial to the success of WLS. For as long as there are obese people out there, we need to be here supporting them and ourselves.

M. had her WLS surgery in January 2005 and currently belongs to three support groups (two on-line and one in-person).
